A cable installation contractor cut Johnston County’s 6" wastewater force main in the vicinity of 7845 NC 210 during the afternoon of June 17, 2009. The County’s three tributary wastewater pump stations were immediately turned off, valves were closed, the repair was made, the spill cleaned up, and the affected area treated with calcium carbonate. The spill was estimated at 4,500 gallons, of which 1,500 gallons was recovered and disposed in the County wastewater system.
The remaining 3,000 gallons entered Sassparilla Swamp, a tributary of Middle Creek. The spill has been reported to North Carolina Department of Natural Resources - Division of Water Quality, and the 5-day report has been submitted.For information, call the Johnston County Department of Utilities at (919) 989-5075.
