[1/25/02) Bayer Corporation's Biological Products Business Group has awarded a $250,000 grant to the Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation which will be used to help transform the Old Elementary School into the new Town Hall.
Clayton Mayor, Doug McCormac, opened the Grant Ceremony at the Old Elementary
School. Also attending the event was Rep. Billy Creech, Town Manager Steve Biggs, Clayton Cultural Arts Foundation President Lyn Austin and Fundraising Chairman Allen Mims (also a County Commissioner), Sen. Allen Wellons and many others. Ron Fuchs, Senior Vice President of Bayer's Technical operations in Clayton was on hand to present the grant, helping Clayton to realize this dream.
When the project is completed in fall of 2002,
it will feature a one of a kind 8,000 square foot auditorium. The auditorium is fully equipped for music, dance and drama performances. Boasting a 600 seat capacity, the renovated auditorium will serve many community needs.
The adjacent building which will be connected by a garden/courtyard area, has 7,000 square feet of "Smart" meeting and conference space, including eight (8) classrooms, consolidating much of the Town of Clayton's services under one
roof. This new facility will also serve as the area's much needed "Business Nerve Center".
The new facility falls within the perimeter of the Historic District, which is part of the Downtown Development Association's future plans. Charles Lee, DDA Board Member took a walk down memory lane while touring the building and is thrilled with Bayer's commitment to Clayton. Mr. Lee commented that he believes it is important to the history of Clayton to maintain
the old Clayton Elementary School and that Clayton will be well served by the historic value as well as the cultural resources for many years to come.
The Old Clayton Elementary School was built in 1926, serving the area until it was closed in 1996. The County Commissioners voted to give the property back to the town, realizing the structure remains the "heart and soul" of Clayton. With the upcoming renovations, this facility will take on a new life, serving
the needs of Clayton's community well into the 21st century! Want to know what is happening in the local community? Visit 4042.com often for the latest local news and events. Remember...while you are sleeping or at work, the Web Dog is out there...sniffing up what's new!
