A public hearing was held
Monday night at Cleveland Elementary School concerning the proposed elementary student attendance lines for the school year 2001-2002.  Dr. Causby, Johnston County's Superintendent, fielded questions from parents requesting boundary line clarification, the "grand fathered" clause, Year Round School possibility and more at the 7:00 meeting in the cafetorium.

Causby reported that the Johnston County Board of Education had devised a plan trying to keep communities together, while proposing attendance boundaries.  Maps were given to everyone in attendance.  Dr. Causby also spoke one on one with many parents about their concerns or confusion of the attendance boundary lines.

Hoping to decrease the number of mobile units now used at McGee's and Cleveland Elementary schools, the opening of a new school will help.  However there still may be a need for some mobile units to handle the areas growth.

A 78 million dollar School Bond issue will be presented in November of this year.  If the School Bond passes it will enable the county to construct 2 more new schools in our area in the year 2005.

Several parents made it clear there was an interest in a "Year Round" school and asked if Polenta could become a school of this type.  Mr. Carrol, Johnston County Board of Education Chairman and Dr. Causby both indicated that a "Year Round" school would have to be a desire of the parents and principal of that school, but it was possible.

Overall the parents in attendance seemed comfortable with the answers to their questions, while a McGee's elementary school teacher begged the board to keep the classroom size down.  One parent complimented the board on their "Outstanding Job" which was followed by applause.

Principal for New Polenta School Selected

Nancy Nettles, Principal for Polenta Elementary and Dr. Causby, Johnston County's Superintendent

Your child/children may be learning their way around in a different school next year.  And if they attend Polenta Elementary (the newest elementary, scheduled to open August 2001), Nancy Nettles will greet them with smiles, as she takes on the responsibility of Polenta's principal.

Mrs. Nettles will have an "open door" policy for all parents and children.  At the time of the public hearing tonight, Mrs. Nettles is the only employee for Polenta Elementary.  A task force, assigned by Dr. Causby, has been attending Job Fairs as well as actively recruiting for the teacher positions that will be available this fall.
