What's Happening Locally - Facts and Some Fiction?

[8/7/01]

Let's start off with one of our favorite
and long term rumors - the one about Six Flags selecting the Cleveland area to build a theme park.  We thought our previous coverage back in February had put this to rest, but we continue to hear about it and get asked questions about the rumor on a regular basis.  Want to know some indepth info on the "hows and why" of building a theme park?  Click here for a site that has been brought to our attention that covers the subject in detail!

Ok, how about some facts.  The new Polenta Elementary school is ready to open for business.  As of August 3rd there were 460 students enrolled, meaning that the faculty will open without having to make use of mobile units.  Utilizing a design that was first used with McGee's Elementary,  the facility has larger rooms and all buildings have connecting, enclosed walkways.

In a change of location, Cleveland Community Church is now meeting at Polenta for their 9 and 11am services (formerly meeting at Cleveland Elementary.)

Staying on the subject of schools, Western Johnston High School construction continues with the new facility to begin operation in August of 2002.

Back to the Rumor Mill - Exit 319 development appears to be shifting info high gear.  The 4042.com Web Dog hears on the street that a strip shopping center is planned for the intersection which will include a grocery store!  In the meantime, it's a fact that the Johnston Family Care Center and Medicap Pharmacy plan to open at 319 sometime in mid-September.

Turning our attention back to 40/42, at the end of Mast Drive (behind Shaikh Medical Center) there will be an automobile service garage - at least that's what the Web Dog hears.  Current mystery - a sign has appeared behind the ABC store at 40/42 announcing the future arrival of Eastern Carolina Medical Center.  We've got you-know-who trying to dig up some more info on it!

Also at 40/42, the Medicine Shoppe Pharmacy is open for business inside the Food Lion on Glen Road.  Their hours are 9am-7pm Monday through Friday and 9am-4pm Saturday - closed on Sundays and most major holidays.

We also hear that Plaza Nail and Tan coming soon to the River Oaks Shopping Center.  The nail and tanning salon will be located at 106-4 Bratton Dr. next door to Diamonds & Gold Direct. Expected to open in August.
