Rally at 40/42, Old School is Auctioned Off..and More!

A local 4042.com feature

[6/17/02)

The weather isn't the only thing that's heating up - loads of local activity going on and we run it down for you here on 4042.com!

This past Friday evening saw the Band of Oz performing at 40/42 in the parking lot of Southwind Surveying.   Along with some great BBQ, the band provided the entertainment for those gathering to support the reelection rally for Judge Addie Rawls.  Rawls is a District Court Judge for Johnston, Harnett and Lee Counties and will be on the ballot in the upcoming 2002 Primary and General Elections.  She is running on a platform of being the only candidate with experience as a lawyer, prosecutor and judge.

The action continued on Saturday, as crystal clear weather provided the backdrop for the auction of the old Cleveland Middle School.  Declared as surplus property, the building and approximately 3 acres went up for bids at 10am sharp, with the sale being handled by Williams Auction Company.  Johnston Co. Commissioners Cookie Pope, Allen Mims and John Moore were also present.

A crowd of approximately 40 were on hand to view the auction process, and they didn't have to wait long - following a review of the rules for the sale the bidding began, ending with the traditional "going once, going twice...SOLD!" just 13 minutes later as the winning offer of $255,000 went unchallenged.

The property was purchased by a partnership of Sonny Johnson, Lanny Clifton and Steve Shipwash to be used by Son-Lan Development Corporation.  No definite plans have yet been released concerning the planned use of the site or building.  The winning bid will be reviewed at the next meeting of the Johnston Co. County Commissioners in July for final approval.

New business?  The signs are popping up all over!  In the former location of It's Racing (behind Smithfield's BBQ), Lundie's Photography has opened for business.  You can reach them at: 232-0033

You can almost taste the cheesesteaks!  Andy's has their sign up on the building and the interior has been outfitted with tables and chairs.  Won't be long now!  (BTW, they have employment applications available in the box on the sign in their parking lot.)

The River Oaks Shopping Center has their newest resident now open for business -  Star Lee's Tae Kwon Do Academy.

As we reported earlier, we will be getting a local branch of the State Employees Credit Union at 40/42!  The sign is now up, announcing they will be open this fall.  Located next to the expansion of Peddler's Village.  And a close neighbor, right behind the CVS, will be a new family dentist.  A sign is up announcing that Dr. John D. Lane and associates will be occupying that site in the future.

The land has been cleared and graded, but we don't know what's planned for it!!  We're talking about the lot between the new Andy's Burgers and Jersey Mike's Subs.  Know what's going in there?  If so, let us know!!
