On Saturday, October 13, 2001, Crossroads Civitan raised over $1,400 during the Cruisin' the Crossroads Poker Run. With over 52 players and riders, the event was made possible through many sponsorships, player participation and community support. Sheriff Steve Bizzell and District Attorney Tom Lock
participated in the poker run, while Clayton Police Department, Selma Police Department, Smithfield Police Department and Johnston County Sheriff Deputies assisted with traffic along the route. Many of the biker's flew American flags as the group made the 70 mile trek across Johnston and Harnett counties. At each stop the players would draw a card, building a "poker hand" which was played at the end of the route for the chance at a cash prize.
Proceeds from the event will be used by Crossroads Civitan to support community projects. 2001 We Build People Campaign Following their pledge to "build strong kids, strong families, strong communities", the Johnston County YMCA kicked off their annual fundraising campaign on Sunday, October 14. The gathering at East Clayton Elementary School gave those attending a chance to hear first hand the past results of YMCA programs
in our community. Stewart McLeod, Campaign Chairman, brought the crowd up-to-date with YMCA activities in Johnston County and challenged everyone to help meet the financial goal before them. YMCA provides a wide range of programs, and each contribution produces far reaching benefits. For example: - $38 allows a child to participate in youth sports for a full season
- $50 allows a senior adult to participate in
aquatics programs
- $100 provides a child with one week of summer day camp
- $250 allows a child to attend an after school program for two months
- $400 sends two teens to a statewide Youth & Government conference
- $1000 enables 20 children to participate in Y-Life for one year
