[9/10/00] On Saturday, September 9, three hundred contestants competed in a triathlon at Tucker Lake in Benson. At the start of the race contestants were required to swim a distance of 1.5 K, bike a distance of 40 K,
and run a distance of 10 K. Competing in Saturday's event were young and old. Females ranging in age from 16 to 61 and males ranging in age from 14 to 63. 24 awards were given: Top 3 Overall (male and female) Top 3 Masters (male and female) Top 3 Age Groups (male and female)
Top 3 Clydesdales (male 200lbs+) Top 3 Athenas (female 150lbs+) Top 3 Male Relays Top 3 Female Relays Top 3 Mixed Relays
South Johnston's Junior ROTC unit members were on hand as volunteers, as were Smithfield/Selma's Junior ROTC and local Girl Scout Troops. 43 AFJROTC Cadets from South Johnston
High School volunteered for the Tucker Lake Triathlon. These cadets served as spotters for the biking and running events as well as personnel taking care of refreshments for the participants. This entourage of high school volunteers was lead by CMSgt. Marty Ringgold, who though out the day reported getting numerous compliments about the volunteers.
