Due to a potential reduction in state and local funding in the upcoming 2009-10 budget, Johnston County Schools may delay the opening of two new high schools scheduled for the fall of 2010.

During a special session of the Board of Education on May 28, JCS Superintendent Ed Croom told the board that the current unsettled state of the district budget may have to explore options to avoid personnel layoffs. "The first option will be to delay the opening of the two new high schools [Cleveland and Corinth-Holders] ... until August 2011," Croom said. "This would save $2.6 million in supplies, equipment, athletic uniforms and required additional personnel." Current Smithfield Middle School Principal Anne Meredith, and North Johnston High School Principal Ross Renfro, named earlier this month to become the new principals at Cleveland and Corinth-Holders high schools, will remain at their current schools for the 2009-10 school year.
