{mosimage}Johnston County Assistant District Attorney Gregory C. Butler was recently awarded the Board of Directors' Award for Outstanding Advocacy in Capital Cases for 2013-2014. The award was given during the "Best of the Best" presentation at the 35th Annual Summer Conference of the Association of Government Attorneys in Capital Litigation in San Diego, California. Since the inception of this award in 1994, only one other North Carolina prosecutor has received this special recognition for such valuable work for victims and their families.
Johnston County District Attorney Susan Doyle traveled to San Diego to see Butler receive this award. "I am so proud that Greg has been recognized on a national level for all of his hard work in the prosecution of capital cases. Greg has devoted his entire career to bringing justice for victims of crime, most recently prosecuting the capital murder case of Jonathan Richardson. Richardson received the death penalty for the murder of four-year-old Teghan Skiba. I am fortunate to have such an experienced prosecutor as part of my team," Doyle stated.
Butler received both his Bachelor of Arts and his Juris Doctor from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and is a native of Sampson County. Butler began his career as a prosecutor in 1985 in the Fourth Prosecutorial District which includes Onslow, Sampson, Duplin and Jones Counties and later worked as an Assistant District Attorney in the Cumberland County District Attorney's Office. Butler has been an Assistant District Attorney in Johnston County since 2006.
Butler attended the awards' ceremony with his wife, Alice, with whom he resides in Roseboro. The couple has two sons, Clement and Harrison.
