The Smithfield-Selma Chamber of Commerce hosted a Dedication and Ribbon Cutting for Neuse Charter School on October 23. Neuse Charter School is located at the former Richard B. Harrison Jr. High School in Selma. The school opened in 2007 as the first public charter school in Johnston County. The mission of Neuse Charter School is to nurture the unique talents and interest of each child, all in a caring, vibrant and innovative academic environment. Tuition is free since it is a public, K-5 school.

Neuse Charter School seeks to provide a challenging learning environment to highly motivated students in their elementary and middle years.
