{mosimage}Since 1886, Tucker Furniture has been a fixture in Johnston County. The furniture store was created by Garland Tucker in Selma. And 123 years later, Edwin Tucker, Garland's grandson and the third generation Tucker business owner, gladly carries on the family business.
In the late 1800s, Garland Tucker built several furniture stores, all located closely to train stations. "Back then, there were no paved roads, so my grandfather had to move the furniture off the trains that came this way from Raleigh," states Mr. Edwin Tucker. And the stores were very successful; Tucker Furniture was the only furniture store to survive the Great Depression in Johnston County. The store has been located in Downtown Smithfield since 1966. Prior to that, Tucker Furniture was located in Selma. There is presently another location in Wilson.
Currently, Tucker Furniture employs eleven people, each very proud of the tradition of the store and the family name. Edwin Tucker attributes their success to "blessings from the Lord and strong customer service." Tucker is most proud of the way his employees treat their customers. "We try to treat everyone who walks through our doors the way we would like to be treated, and I think it makes a big difference." Tucker confesses this philosophy was created 123 years ago, when his grandfather opened the first store and when his father took the helm in 1920s. "Many furniture stores are not customer service oriented, and have not been able to maintain a loyal client base as we have," he says. Tucker is proud of the reputation they have built since the store first opened more than a century ago. "We carry high-end brands, like Lay-Z-Boy, and we’re proud to offer them in our store."
Customers are also proud of the products they purchase from the store. They keep coming back. Mr. Tucker says a lot of his business is from repeat customers; which is likely not a trend found in other local furniture stores. If you’re looking for great buys on furniture, Tucker’s Furniture is a great place to purchase. But if you’re looking for a business built over a century ago with old-fashioned values and strong customer service, Tucker Furniture is the only place you’ll find it. Tucker Furniture is located in downtown Smithfield at 501 East Market Street.
