A study to determine how many people would use the train is set to begin soon. "The NCRR runs right through the middle of town, so we would be a natural for a station," said Planning Director James "Skip" Browder. The route, which has a projected cost of about $115 million, is considered more likely to be built than proposals in other parts of the state, since the Railroad has already spent more than $25 million over the last three years installing passing sidings and modernized signaling along the route. It also made room for double tracks a few years ago when replacing the bridge over Highway 54 in Research Triangle Park. Commuter systems in other parts of the state would require more infrastructure to handle both freight and commuter trains. The Railroad is looking at four other commuter route proposals that have a total expected cost of around a billion dollars: • Burlington to Greensboro • Burlington to West Durham • Raleigh to West Durham • University Station Road to Chapel Hill Commuter rail projects like the one through Clayton are more likely to be funded now that the nation's railroads are getting billions in federal funds for new projects.
