(Smithfield, NC) - The Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation and the Smithfield Parks and Recreation Department will host Smithfield's annual "Friends of the 4th" Celebration at the Historic Smithfield Town Commons on Saturday, July 2, 2011.

"With the changes in the State Laws governing firework operators, the cost to community with hosting the display has skyrocketed - no pun intended," stated Chris Johnson, Executive Director of the Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation. "By holding the celebration on Saturday, we have been able to save a tremendous amount of dollars for our community and the sponsors that support us. With other communities having their events on Monday, we also hope that more people are able to come out and see the show here in Downtown Smithfield."

Beginning at 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, July 2, the celebration will be filled with games and musical entertainment for the entire family. The independence celebration will conclude with a traditional fireworks display at 9:30 p.m.

The Smithfield Town Commons is located on Front Street in Downtown Smithfield. For more information, please contact Downtown Smithfield Development Corporation at 919-934-0887 or visit them on the web at www.downtownsmithfield.com .
